History of English Language 
Course Description 
Prerequisite: ENGL 2110.  
A study of the development of English, with attention to influential historical events and of the evolving structure of the language. Black English and other influences on American English may be included.

Course Description:
 
The primary goal of this course is to help you understand the historical development of the
English language.  We will become familiar with several linguistic terms and analysis techniques and then we will examine the history of the English language.  We will also examine the current state of English in the world.

Course Objectives:

During this course, students will:
  *  Know and be able to use common linguistic terms
  * Be able to explain reasons for language change (internal and external factors)
 *  Know the three major periods of English development and the major characteristics
      associated with each change
 *  Identify different varieties of English
 *  Explore different varieties of English around the world and discuss their linguistic,
     sociolinguistic, cultural, and pedagogical implications

Course Grade:
Course grades will be calculated on a 100 point scale.
  A=100-90
  B=89-80
  C=79-70
  D=69-60
  F=60-0
 Points will be awarded in the following amounts.

Attendance Policy:

You are expected to attend all class sessions.  You may miss two classes with no penalty.  Being absent more than two times will adversely affect your grade.
