V.CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION:

Prerequisite: MUSI 2222.

Techniques of structural analysis of music compositions. Advanced structural analysis of music compositions in a variety of styles and periods with emphasis on harmony and form. Analysis of contrapuntal form is included.


 

VI.PURPOSE/RATIONALE:

The purpose of this course is to present techniques of harmonic and contrapuntal analysis beyond the basis concepts presented in the two-year tonal harmony sequence of course. The importance of this knowledge to the teaching and performing musician cannot be overstated.Materials used will be drawn largely from the above text.


 

VII. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The student will develop:

1. An enhanced knowledge of various musical forms

2. An expanded knowledge of analytical procedure

3. An ability to analyze contrapuntal music

4. An ability to relate analysis to performance.


 

VIII.COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Choose a selection from your repertoire for this semester to perform an in-depth analysis of harmonic and phrase structure, and overall form.You will then write a minimum 10-page, typed, double-spaced written analysis of this piece, citing the phrase structure, harmonic structure, major cadential movements, aspects of the piece such as its form, and any deviations from established practice, which you note, plus any other aspects of the piece which you discover in your analysis.Provide with your paper a clearly marked score on which the reader can refer to examples cited in your paper. This paper will be due on or before December 6, 2001


 

IX.ATTENDANCE POLICY:

This class is an upper division course, which meets only one time per week. Be present at every class. Please refer to the departmental attendance policy in the Music Major Handbook.

You will then have a period without tests, so that you may work on your paper.

The final examination will be held on Friday, December 7, 2001.
