Term Paper Requirements – Dr. T's Upper Division Geography Classes

This is how your paper MUST be done.  Any questions refer to this page.

The quality of term papers is more important than quantity in this class.  Therefore the individual and group page requirements are reduced (see #4 below), but the expectation of quality work is high.  Maps are integral to geographic research, quality Xerox copies are acceptable for inclusion in your term paper.

1.  Your paper must be typewritten and double-spaced using 12 point Times New Roman font.

2.  One (1) inch margins on all sides, I check this with a ruler, you have to manually set the margins in your document, this is not automatic.  Please see the instructor if you need help with this requirement.

3.  Number your pages, starting sequentially with the first page of writing. Cover pages, maps and  bibliographic reference pages are NOT counted in the page requirement.

4.  Length; 8-10 pages for an individual. (Group Projects will be considered: 2 persons, 12-14 pages; 3  persons 16-18 pages) The major emphasis will be presenting a cohesive, well-written statement of the status of your chosen topic without turning it into just a review of the literature.  You should be able to communicate your opinions and perceptions of your topic which have been changed or developed as a result of your research. Also offer a critical evaluation of the phenomenon you studied.  Include a bibliography with your paper of at "least"12 sources (18 for two person or 24 for three person projects). Deviations from this requirement, MUST be cleared with the professor.  Flexibility will depend on your topic. All of your sources MUST be used and cited properly in your paper…and…they must be evenly distributed between books, periodicals and websites.
(NOTE:  Consult with the instructor, if you plan to include personal interviews in
   your term paper).

5.  You must use topic headings or sub-headings to improve the readability of your paper.  The paper must have a separate Conclusion written by you (see #4 above). The development of your critical thinking skills is important to me.

6.  This is a Geography course…your paper MUST include detailed physical and cultural geographic information on the area you are studying to set the geographic stage on which the phenomenon you are researching occurs.   This point is critical to the overall term paper experience in this class.

7.  Your paper MUST include at least one map related to your topic, which you have to analyze as to how it pertains to your topic as an integral part of your paper.

8. The most important part of your paper is your use of citations.  You must cite all material that is quoted directly, paraphrased, or excerpted from the work, writing, or printed ideas of other authors and researchers. Lack of proper citation will result in a "no-grade" return of your paper to be reworked.

9. Citations must be made in the body of the text.  Example:  (Jenkins, 1994, p. 2)

10.
NO Encyclopedias are to be used as sources...use only original sources.  This includes the ever popular Wikipedia, to which anyone can submit articles or addenda.

11. The bibliography (list of references) is separate from the required number of pages and alphabetically arranged.  Use the following examples as to how the bibliography must be done for THIS class:

For Books:
Urwin, D.W. (1991).  The Community of Europe: A History of Integration Since 1945.
            London: Longman Group Ltd.

For Periodicals (magazines) and Journal Articles:
Loescher, G. (1989). The European Community and Refugees. International Affairs.
            65(4):617-636 (Autumn).
(Note: 65 is the Volume number; (4) is the number of issues so far in the year for the periodical).

 For Interviews:
Bradley, R. (1995). First Secretary – Interior & Justice, United Kingdom Permanent
Representation to the European Union (personal interview).

For Websites:

Author or Sponsoring Organization. (1999). Title of the Page or Site.
            http:/www.kennesaw.edu/~htrendel/whatever.html

12.  I take your research and its presentation seriously, I will return unacceptable papers without a grade for further work and corrections.  However, I will look at a hard copy rough draft of your paper to help follow the requirements listed here (but not the day its due).  Consult with me if you have any problems with your paper, I am here to help you turn out a quality project.  (Dr. T)
